  1. Armour at the head

This page will grow into the whole of how a blow is settled. For now it covers one part of it, the one our tests have answered: what stands between a blow and the head.

Armour at the head

A blow that lands still has to get through the protection in front of it, and that depends on where it lands. Armour comes in separate pieces, and each piece lists a value for each part of the body it covers. A helm lists one for the head. A hauberk or a breastplate lists values for the body, the arms and the legs, and usually nothing for the head.

On a unit with no protection of its own, a helm worn over such body armour decides the head by itself: the body armour adds nothing there. Measured · n=87

Later tests repeated the check with other helms over other body armours, and the rule held every time. Measured · n=12,083

n counts head hits on test defenders wearing a helm over body armour with no head value, in six captures with helm values from 3 to 25; each was compared with the helm's listed value.

Every one of those units had no natural protection. How natural protection and a helm combine at the head is a separate question, and this page says nothing about it yet.

protection
What stands between a unit and a blow, from its armour plus any natural protection of its own. The defender adds a DRN to it, and a hit wounds only when the damage total is higher, so a tie does nothing. · Full article · back to text
